Florida Tree Snails are hermaphroditic, meaning they have both male and female sexual organs. Hillis (1989) investigated with laboratory breeding and found that partial self-fertilization (a single clutch containing both self-fertilized and outcrossed eggs) does occur in L. fasciatus solidus. Their genetalia are located on the right side of the head and behind the antennae. The snail is sexually mature in their third year and they can locate mates by following slime trials (Brown, 1978). Mating occurs between the months of June and August with a 1-2 day courtship and then egg deposition occurs in the months of September and October (Jones, 1954). One to fifty eggs, which are a thin, elliptical, pale brown, calcareous shell, (Pilsbry, 1912) are deposited in the nests built in the leaf litter four to five centimeters deep (Voss, 1976). The eggs hatch the following April in concurrence with the beginning of the rainy season. Simpson (1929a) and Voss (1976 observed excessive numbers of dead snails soon after the egg laying period which reflects a high post reproductive mortality rate.

Desde finales del 2008 existen las intenciones del Estado por comprar tierras dedicadas a la agricultura en el sur de la Florida; con el objetivo de impulsar la RESTAURACION Y CONSERVACION de los Everglades unos 180.000 acres por un valor de $1.34 billion.(ver) Estos fondos y cantidades de terrenos fueron disminuyendo durante el 2009.

Este año 2011 el gobierno federal al parecer asegurara fondos para impulsar la ya mencionada RESTAURACION (ver); contrastando con las intenciones del actual gobernador de la Florida de "cortar" 66% de los fondos estatales destinados a la misma. (ver)

No obstante es importante conservar y preservar los Everglades mas allá de las intenciones políticas; pues de todos es conocido que nuestra CALIDAD DE VIDAD en el Sur de la Florida depende de este delicado ecosistema.

The Mahogany Hammock habitat is found in many places within Florida's Everglades National Park. They are one of several kinds of tropical hardwood hammocks, having the typical teardrop shape and consisting primarily of hardwood, broadleaf trees. These tropical trees sit on slightly elevated patches of ground that are maintained by balanced water levels and activity of fire. Though the hammocks are generally resistant to fire because of the vegetation that grows there, fire serves a prevention for the tree islands to spread too far into the surrounding wetlands and open area.
