The rare "coontie hairstreak" butterfly, also known as an atala, has been spotted at the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, west of Boynton Beach.
The larvae were found on a coontie plant in a renovated butterfly garden. The coontie hairstreak, with iridescent black wings and blue or green spots, nearly became extinct because of the coontie's decline.
